EV Chillers & Battery Cooling Solutions
Active Cooling with Compact, Low Voltage EV Chillers
Aspen Systems manufactures ultra-compact, energy-efficient liquid cooling solutions tailored for EV battery cooling by overcoming space and power constraints that make active cooling challenging. Our Liquid Chiller Modules (LCMs) feature Aspen’s groundbreaking ‘World’s Smallest, DC Compressor,’ integrated into a miniature refrigeration system that delivers up to 1400 Watts of cooling power on low-voltage inputs (12–48V DC). Originally developed for the U.S. Military, these LCMs provide the industry’s smallest footprint, lowest power consumption, and full mobile-ruggedization with exceptional cooling capacity.

Learn how Aspen Systems optimizes electric vehicle battery performance, using compact, compressor-based chillers designed to maintain optimal battery temperatures—even in rugged, high-load, or off-grid environments. These systems are engineered for efficiency, long life, and seamless integration into a wide range of EV platforms.

‘Coolest’ race car in the American Solar Challenge
- Universities across the country race their cars in the American Solar Challenge.
- Safety constraints dictate that when the battery compartment reaches 40 degrees C, the team solar must exit the race until the temperature falls to safe levels.
- One of the race participants, Principia College employed an Aspen Systems Liquid Chiller Module (LCM) to actively cool the batteries and power electronics for a competitive edge.
Compact Cooling for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Aspen provides compact vapor-compression cooling technology for integration into OEM Battery Energy Storage Systems.
- Liquid Chiller Modules (LCMs) and Direct Refrigerant Cooling (DRC) support liquid-cooled and refrigerant-based thermal architectures.
- Miniature cooling is well suited for outdoor battery cabinets, modular BESS, microgrids, remote-site backup power, and mobile energy storage.
Compact Cooling for Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS)
- Aspen designs compact, energy-efficient cooling systems for integration into OEM Battery Thermal Management Systems.
- Liquid Chiller Modules (LCMs) and Direct Refrigerant Cooling (DRC) support liquid-cooled and direct refrigerant BTMS architectures.
- Designed for demanding battery-powered equipment including forklifts, construction and off-highway equipment, specialty EVs, and recreational vehicles.
Cooling Rapid EV Charging
- A common complaint from owners of electric vehicles is the amount of time to recharge the batteries.
- Rapid charging stations dramatically reduce the charging time to a few minutes.
- With currents of over 500 Amps in rapid EV charging, the cable needs to be actively cooled to prevent meltdown.
- Aspen Systems developed a custom liquid chiller small enough to fit within the charging station and operate in extreme environments.
Cooling of 9kW Battery Storage System
- Hybrid power stations consist of a bank of batteries to provide kilo-Watts of electrical power in remote locations where power from the grid is unavailable.
- Battery performance degrades in hot environments.
- Aspen Systems supplied an ECU-1800, a ruggedized air cooling system to keep battery temperature stable.
