Aspen was approached by a customer to develop a cold plate which generated a high heat flux from the surface of batteries for electric vehicles. This system was built using two compressors to achieve the desired heat removal. The compressors run in parallel, but share the same condenser, evaporator, and expansion valve. On electric vehicle applications where the batteries represent a significant weight, the size and integration of a cooling system is critical to deployment of a practical solution. Using 2 Aspen compressors as opposed to a single larger compressor offers a great advantage in terms of configuration, size, and weight.
